Josh Mountford is an English cellist studying a Masters at the Royal Academy of Music under the tuition of Jo Cole. Starting the Cello at the age of 4, Josh later joined the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire tutored by Elaine Ackers, before moving on to Chetham’s School Of Music, Manchester, where he studied under Head of Strings, Nicholas Jones. After completing his studies at Chetham’s in 2018, Josh began his Undergraduate education at the Royal Northern College of Music taught by Hannah Roberts. Josh graduated the RNCM in 2022 with a First Class degree in BMus (Hons).
Performing in many prestigious venues across the UK, such as the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Barbican, Liverpool Philharmonic and Sage Gateshead. As well as Konzerthaus in Berlin.
Josh has won many awards, most recently receiving the Shirely Catterall Award and Help Musician’s UK Postgraduate Award. The latter, has generously helped Josh to further his education continuing into Postgraduate level.
Josh was the Principal Cellist of the CBSO Youth Orchestra in 2018/19, having first joined the Orchestra at the age of 13. The orchestral environment has always been a big focus in Josh’s life from an early age, being part of the National Children’s Orchestra of GB, CBSO Youth Academy as well as the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
As well as orchestral work, Josh is actively involved with many chamber ensembles. Josh is a member of the Bauhaus Trio. The piano trio won the esteemed RNCM Nossek Prize in March 2022. Josh also has a vast amount of experience performing at Weddings and events in different ensembles and also as a Solo Cellist.
Josh is a band member of Forever Elton, performing as a cellist and also as a keyboardist. They perform at events and theatres across the UK.
In February 2019, Josh featured in a collaborative project: ‘MARS VR Experience’. He performed alongside Dennis Tjiok, composer and organist, in the debut of this project. A trailer of MARS VR can be seen on the Listen page.
Josh was a member of the Michael Haydn Orchestra of Manchester for the 19/20 season and performed Handel’s Oratorio, Solomon, in the months of November and December of 2019.
Josh can be heard playing the cello in the feature film soundtracks to; Journey to Le Man (Patrick Stewart), Vendetta (Danny Dyer) and Breakdown (Craig Fairbrass). He also features on the soundtrack to the 2019 film Stalked, directed by Justin Edgar.
He currently has commissioned a Luthier Robin Aitchison Montagnana replica Cello and is grateful for the multiple awards he has received towards this.
